Course description: Over the last 25 years, Jane Austen has transformed from classic British author to international literary icon. Hundreds of retellings of her classic novels have emerged, both in print and in film. This course will focus upon a close reading of two core Austen texts – Pride and Prejudice and Emma – as well as contemporary retellings of them. Students will explore the enduring relevance of Austen’s early 19th century novels, the surge in Austen’s popularity from the late 1990s to the present day, and the literary value of various Austen spinoffs.
