This course explores the development, organization, and implementation of the Massachusetts ELA Common Core (March 2011). Participants will focus on the implications for school reform and unpack the 10 College and Career Readiness Anchor standards that span grades Pre-K through 5. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of skill development across the grades in the areas of reading (text types and purposes: narrative and informational text, and foundational skills), writing (text type and purposes: narrative, argumentative, informational), speaking & listening (comprehension & collaboration, presentation of knowledge and ideas), and language (conventions, knowledge, & vocabulary acquisition). This knowledge and understanding will be utilized to align curriculum with Common Core objectives and to design lesson plans. Lesson plans will be designed within a unit of study that aligns to the ELA Common Core.
