Understanding and Preventing Violence in Schools

Understanding and Preventing Violence in Schools

Instructor James Barrett

Course Number PRDV 79624

  • $ 59500

This course is designed for education professionals, interested in understanding and preventing school violence. This course will explore the social causes of violence in the school setting with a focus on race, class and gender.  Many schools today (grades k-12) focus their attention on unlikely violence such as gun violence while ignoring violence that takes place regularly on school campuses like bullying, assaults, sexual assaults, intimidation, hate crime and harassment.  The course will cover various types of violence, from fighting and sexual harassment to bullying and suicide and other forms of “hidden violence” that often go unreported.  Students will identify stakeholders and explore potential solutions to modify popular school anti-violence trends and pedagogy.
